What is an agent?
A build agent (commonly referred to as a runner) runs on your infrastructure or on Buildkite-hosted compute, and runs one build job at a time. You can run as many agents as you want, in the same or separate queues, and Buildkite will coordinate the work between them. Agents can be securely and reliably deployed across different networks and environments.
Who counts as an active user?
Active users are unique users that access the Buildkite system in any given month. Accessing the system includes logging into Buildkite.com, interacting with the Buildkite API, or triggering a build.
How does burst capacity affect my bill?
Buildkite is designed for workloads that spike. Self-hosted agent charges reflect sustained monthly usage rather than isolated peaks, so short bursts won't turn into unexpected overage bills. You aren't penalized for temporarily using the capacity your builds need.
Enterprise includes more headroom for large, variable workloads, with custom pricing designed to keep costs predictable when demand surges. Contact us for more information.
Are there any limits to scale or concurrency with Buildkite?
No, with our Enterprise plan, you set your own limits with self-hosted agents. Buildkite simultaneously handles multiple enterprise customers with over 100,000 concurrent agents.

Yes, Buildkite offers special pricing for open source projects. Contact us to confirm your project is open source, and we'll enable your account.
