We're looking for a VP of Engineering to lead the engineering culture across all of Buildkite. Our deeply technical products are used by some of the best engineering teams in the world, and we’ve big ambitions for what’s next. You’ll play a vital role in how we go about that, partnering with the Head of Product to define what we build, how we build it, and to evolve our culture of empowering others, building it together, and maintaining momentum. You'll report to our co-CEO Keith Pitt, be a member of our leadership team, and manage the engineering managers.
What a typical week might look like:
Video calls with others on the team to provide feedback or problem solve, or to just say hi.
Collaborating with the Head of Product on how to better support the cross-functional product teams, and ensure they have the resources to do their best work.
Communicating with the company to drive best practices, and evolve our engineering culture as we scale.
Developing and leading security practices across the company, helping to ensure our systems and processes are stable, secure and compliant.
Exploring high-level architecture and engineering decisions with engineers and technical leaders, ensuring our teams and systems are aligned as we grow.
Participating in Leadership Team strategy sessions and board meetings.
Collaborating with Head of Business Operations for data, metrics, and reporting.
Collaborating with Head of People on engineering career development, team growth, and hiring plans.
Collaborating with the heads of Customer Success, Sales and Marketing to ensure engineers are well supported across all teams in the organization.
This job is for you if:
Have people leadership skills. You will develop our high performing engineering culture as we grow so we’re looking for experience leading engineering teams.
Are a good communicator. You should value empathy for your teams and customers and be able to articulate your ideas and feelings when writing or speaking. You’ll need to clearly communicate technical concepts to a wide audience.
Like solving problems. You are comfortable working with folks to solve problems. If you don’t know the answer immediately, you will be comfortable digging into the problem until you can help find a solution.
Have your finger on the pulse when it comes to industry trends. You should understand what technologies like Bazel and Kubernetes are, and how they fit into developer workflows.
Enjoy mentoring others. You provide guidance to both managers and engineers on how they can advance their careers.
Think strategically. You will think about objectives, context and concessions we’ll need to stay ahead of our competition.
Know how to budget. Developer teams use lots of tools, and they all cost money. You should know your spend and prioritise optimization work when it makes sense.
Are comfortable with working remotely. We are a remote-first company, so you will need to be comfortable working by yourself and taking initiative when team members are offline.

Set yourself up with a great work environment, either at home or in a co-working space, with a budget for a desk and chair, and a new computer and phone every 24 months. We’ll also cover the cost of plants, art, or anything else you need to set yourself up with a beautiful and productive work environment.
Take care of your health and wellbeing away from the screen, with 6 weeks of paid leave per year, the ability to take time out of work for fitness, and a yearly budget to spend on things like yoga, climbing, personal training, or a day at the zoo.
Share in the company’s success, and have a stake in what you’re helping to build. Everyone on the team receives a percentage share of the company profits each quarter, and an equity stake through our employee share program.
