Keith Pitt
Founder
Keith built the original Buildkite in 2013 sitting in an airport terminal and then subsequently led the company as Founder & CEO for thirteen years, growing it from a bootstrapped Australian-based startup into one of the most trusted names in devtools. Prior to Buildkite, Keith built and sold Desktoppr while holding lead engineering roles at Envato and Qantas. Across more than a decade at the helm, Keith defined Buildkite’s product vision, engineering culture and customer-first philosophy, shaping the company’s first chapter.
At the centre of that chapter was an architectural call most of the market didn’t make. While competitors converged on managed, prescriptive CI runtimes, Keith insisted Buildkite stay closer to a set of composable primitives; control plane in the cloud, agents on customer infrastructure and no strong opinions on workload shape. The company’s primary product was built on this hybrid model, an unfashionable position for years that has aged into a prescient one.
Under Keith’s leadership, Buildkite raised a $28M Series A in 2020, led by OpenView with General Catalyst, followed by a $31M Series B in 2022 led by OneVentures and AirTree. In 2021, Buildkite launched its second product Test Analytics and in 2023, Buildkite made its first acquisition, bringing in Packagecloud to extend the platform into native package and artifact management, both now integrated as key pieces of the Buildkite platform capability.
Every job Buildkite runs today for OpenAI, Anthropic, Uber, Airbnb, Block, Canva, Shopify and the rest moves through architecture Keith designed and a culture he shaped.
Tim Lucas
Co-founder, Board Director
Tim co-founded Buildkite with Keith in 2013 and served as co-CEO/CMO until 2022, designing and building the core product, raising two rounds of funding and scaling the company to US$15M ARR and a team of 75. Before Buildkite, Tim was a Senior Software Engineer at Pin Payments, where he launched Pin’s JavaScript API and embeddable pay button, and at Amen, leading web application UI and front-end engineering; prior to that he ran a Sydney-based design studio working with startups across Australia and Berlin. Tim now serves on the Buildkite Board, bringing deep expertise in product design, brand and open-source community to the company’s long-term direction.
